About John Coppinger, D.O.

Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine / Chair, Osteopathic Principles

John Coppinger

Dr. John Coppinger has devoted his life to the art and science of osteopathic medicine. A 1992 graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, he began his postdoctoral training with an internship at Atlantic City Medical Center and continued into a residency in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (FP-OMM) at Ohio University/O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.

John's path has been deeply shaped by mentorship. From his first year in medical school, he studied closely with Dr. James Jealous—an influence that would shape not only his clinical work but his way of seeing patients, health, and life itself. Through Dr. Jealous, he had the opportunity to learn from master osteopaths such as Louis Hasbrouck, D.O., Robert Fulford, D.O., Ann Wales, D.O., and Herbert Miller, D.O., FAAO—each contributing to a lineage of healing that emphasizes wholeness, presence, and the subtle dynamics of health.

For nearly three decades, Dr. Coppinger practiced as an Osteopathic General Practitioner, offering hands-on, compassionate care grounded in osteopathic principles. His journey has taken him from rural practice to global service, including two years in Iraq as a physician with the U.S. Department of State.

In academic medicine, he has held leadership roles including Vice Chair of OMM at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Interim Chair at Lincoln Memorial University–DCOM, mentoring the next generation of osteopathic physicians in both the practical and philosophical foundations of the profession.

Dr. Coppinger continues to teach in residency programs and at The Progressive School of Osteopathy in Toronto, Canada. He believes in creating spaces where students not only learn technique, but cultivate awareness, stillness, and compassion. He now brings this vision to the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine, joining the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine / Principles and Practices, where he hopes to help students recognize the health in every patient—and in themselves.
