Student Health Insurance

Students are required to have health insurance coverage throughout all four years of medical school. Before initial registration and at the beginning of each academic year, all students must provide proof of health insurance. Adequate insurance must cover students in other states.

Students may obtain insurance through a variety of options including participation in the insurance plan of a parent, spouse, health exchange, or the school-sponsored plan. To ensure students have access to a comprehensive plan, MSOM offers a student health insurance plan through United Healthcare. Details regarding cost, coverage, and eligibility criteria can be found on the 2025-2026 MSOM Student Health Insurance Summary.

Students who enroll in the school-sponsored plan will be charged annually during the Fall semester for the student portion of the health insurance plan. The cost of coverage for additional dependents will be billed separately through United Healthcare.

All students must visit the United Healthcare Student Resources portal to either enroll in the school-sponsored health insurance plan or provide proof of ACA compliant health insurance coverage. The Office of the Dean will oversee the verification process for adequacy of the student health insurance. Students who fail to submit a waiver or who are not approved for a waiver, will be automatically enrolled in the school-sponsored health insurance plan and charged the associated fee.

Students who enroll in school-sponsored health insurance plan will have coverage from July 1 to June 30 each year. Students who withdraw, take a leave of absence, or stop attending within 31 days of the start of the Fall semester will be removed from the insurance plan and refunded the associated fee, less any paid claim amounts.

To enroll or submit a waiver request, visit the United Healthcare Student Resources page.
