About Jeffrey Small, DO
Adjunct Faculty of Clinical Sciences
After serving four years in the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division (2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment), Dr. Small completed his undergraduate degree in microbiology with minors in genetics and anthropology from North Carolina State University, going on to receive his D. O. from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified by ACOS and proctored oral board exams for several years.
Following a traditional osteopathic internship at Community General Hospital in Harrisburg, PA, he completed his general surgery residency focusing on minimally invasive surgery and bariatrics. Dr. Small began practicing as a general and bariatric surgeon in PA and MD, followed by being appointed Chair of Bariatric Surgery at Meritus Medical Center, where he worked for nearly a decade.
One of his notable achievements includes helping Meritus Medical Center achieve center of excellence status for Bariatrics and building a comprehensive surgical weight loss program in his community. His professional experience extends to serving rural medicine needs through direct patient care at Fulton County Medical Center in PA, and teaching as adjunct faculty at Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine where he trained students and residents at UPMC in Harrisburg, PA.
Currently, Dr. Small is pursuing a master’s degree in education to round out his expertise in teaching medicine. His personal experiences include surviving a heart transplant, cardiac tamponade, acute renal failure, dialysis, lymphoma, and other related health challenges that have informed his approach to teaching future doctors and shaped his resilience and dedication to both his professional and personal life. He lives in Hagerstown, MD with his wife, two daughters, two newfypoos, and one corn snake.
