"In similar case studies, the local medical school generated $100 million of annual economic activity for their counties. It also means more access to higher education in our community. But most of all, it will allow the area to reduce the gap in current physician shortages. Currently, it is hard to expand medical services and locations without enough medical providers. We need to continue to meet the growing community health needs of our region, and creating educational pathways is a strong solution.

As we look to the future needs of our children and their children, it's so important to know that the next generation of knowledgeable and compassionate professionals are ready to step in. The proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine is a wonderful opportunity for our community to support the development of future physicians. We each play an important role in carving their education.

I am very excited about this project not just because of its many substantial benefits to our work at Meritus and its positive impact on the health of Washington County and the surrounding areas, but also because of its hugely positive social and economic impact on Washington County. Specifically, we have always needed more young professionals and pre-professional people in our community, and this new school will dramatically grow that underrepresented demographic, which will in turn encourage more young professional people in other professions and industries to live and work here as well. We also hope of course that some of those who train here will stay here once they have experienced the many benefits we enjoy.

A Gift of Knowledge. A Legacy of Community Care

At Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM), every student begins a new chapter—one filled with determination, compassion, and a deep commitment to caring for others. You have the unique opportunity to recognize that journey in a meaningful and lasting way.

Through our Chapters of Care campaign, you can honor a medical student, professor, Meritus Health provider, or loved one by sponsoring a symbolic book that will be proudly displayed in the D.M. Bowman Academic Hall with their name. You’ll also have the opportunity to include a brief message, which will be shared with the honoree and placed on the inside cover.

While these books won’t be opened for study, they serve as a visible tribute—representing the legacy of support that surrounds each future physician. Each donation is both a symbol of recognition and a meaningful contribution to the education, support, and success of our next generation of physicians.

Our team would love to help customize a giving opportunity for you. Please contact us so we can align your needs and goals with an opportunity to memorialize your loved one:
